This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
Coming from an architectural background, I have always admired engineers for the way they understand a different dimension of a building. Since joining Cundall and working closely with multiple engineering disciplines, that respect has only deepened. I demonstrate engineering excellence by creating opportunities for collaboration, encouraging open dialogue between disciplines, and helping teams navigate challenges while staying focused on project objectives.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
Over the next 50 years, I'd like to see the industry become even more collaborative, with fewer silos between disciplines and earlier engagement across project teams. Some of the best project outcomes come from bringing different perspectives together at the right time. I believe we'll get there by investing in people, embracing new technologies, and continuing to strengthen communication across our industry.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
A myth I'd love to bust is that projects can succeed without design management, or that the soft skills involved are less important than technical expertise. Some think it's just endless meetings and chasing actions, but it’s much more than that. Design managers ensure everyone is speaking the same language and working towards the same objectives, spotting coordination issues early, bringing the right people together, and keeping key decisions clearly tracked.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
Two experiences have really shaped me. First, working with managers who brought teams together and guided us through some very challenging projects taught me a lot about leadership and trust. Second, achieving my chartered status after a long, demanding process showed me what I’m capable of when I commit to something long term and push through with real grit and determination.
