At Cundall, I have consistently challenged conventional structural engineering approaches by leveraging digital and parametric workflows to improve efficiency, optimise design outcomes, and support sustainability objectives. I actively keep track of emerging technologies and industry developments to ensure projects benefit from the most effective and innovative solutions available. By collaborating closely with other disciplines, listening to clients and project stakeholders, and responding proactively to evolving requirements, I help deliver integrated outcomes.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
Over the past 50 years, Cundall has made significant progress in innovation and sustainability, reshaping how we design and deliver buildings. Looking ahead, the focus needs to shift further towards deeper adoption of digital tools and bolder schemes on projects. A key priority is actively setting the direction of change. This means working more closely with clients, designers, and innovators early in the process, and positioning ourselves as early adopters in emerging technologies.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
"Structural engineers just say no to bold architecture." One of the biggest myths about our profession is that we're the "department of no". In reality, we thrive on solving problems. If we're involved early in the feasibility and concept stages, we can work collaboratively to develop solutions that realise the design intent, and even suggest others, while remaining practical and efficient. So bring us the ambitious ideas — we enjoy the challenge!
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
Working across different geographies and projects has taught me that successful engineering is about more than technical design. It has helped me understand how local needs, cultural differences, and stakeholder priorities influence project outcomes. These experiences have strengthened my ability to listen, adapt, and collaborate effectively, reinforcing my belief that the best solutions come from understanding people, not just solving technical problems.
