This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
I show engineering excellence by combining technical expertise with a proactive problem-solving approach. In data centre projects, where reliability and resilience are critical, I consider the broader impact of every design decision rather than simply meeting requirements. I am also committed to continuous learning and collaboration, drawing on the expertise of colleagues to achieve the best outcomes while continually developing my own skills and knowledge.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
Over the next 50 years I would like to see sustainability, inclusion and innovation become fully embedded as standard practice across the industry. At Cundall, we are already working towards Zero Carbon Design 2030. I believe sustainability and inclusive innovation go hand in hand, as diverse perspective lead to stronger, more resilient solutions. I believe by embracing collaboration, digital tools and creating truly inclusive teams we can create better design outcomes and drive lasting change.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
A myth I would like to bust is that electrical engineers spend their days working independently on calculations and technical drawings. In reality the role is highly collaborative and involves close coordination with clients, architects, contractors and colleagues across a wide range of engineering disciplines and specialisms. Success is not just about technical expertise; it is also about communications, teamwork and the ability to bring together different perspectives to deliver effective engineering solutions.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
Rather than a single milestone, it’s the people who have shaped my journey who have had the greatest impact on my career. I’ve been fortunate to receive support from many individuals along the way - from a university lecturer who encouraged me to undertake a placement year, which gave me valuable insight into professional life, to the team in Birmingham, who have helped develop my technical knowledge and build my confidence as an engineer.
