This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
I show engineering excellence by prioritising safety, precision and quality in my work. I ensure I uphold my work to the industry standards and learn through iterations and improved outcomes. I continuously develop my skills and knowledge by being curious and asking questions. I also make the most of the knowledge at Cundall by collaboration and communicating to help deliver high quality outcomes.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
In the next 50 years, I hope to see further progress in sustainability with improved low carbon design and smarter more efficient systems that maximise clean energy. I think we will achieve this through innovation, digital engineering and continued collaboration towards new solutions. By investing in new technologies and developing people's skills, we can create more sustainable and resilient designs.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
A common myth about being an electrical apprentice in Building Services is that it is hands-on manual work. In reality it is a design focused role, developing detailed layouts, understanding and working to specifications and ensuring electrical building systems, such as lighting, are safe and compliant. It requires an in-depth technical understanding, attention to detail and problem solving to design working systems.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
One of the most defining experiences in my journey was taking part in The Air League aircraft build project. Being able to work hands-on in an RAF hangar, solving real engineering problems and contributing to the build of a functioning aircraft helped me develop myself technically and interpersonally. It ultimately guided me to my career with Cundall, where I now apply those skills and continue to keep growing myself.
