Our sustainability journey
2026 marks our 50th anniversary, and we are proud to look back on half a century of pioneering sustainability - across both our projects and our practice. From the very beginning, sustainability has been central to who we are, rooted in the belief of Geoffrey Cundall and our founding partners that engineering can be a force for good.
Cundall was first established in Newcastle and Edinburgh, later expanding to include a London office. Alongside the original four disciplines, sustainability (known at the time as low energy design) quickly became a key part of Cundall’s design philosophy. The early 2000s, saw our business expand its horizons with further offices in the UK and our first overseas team in Sydney, Australia. Since then, Cundall’s 28 offices continued to spread between Australia and Newcastle. What began as a small British consultancy 50 years ago has grown into a global community of over 1,300 people, all united by a shared purpose – to engineer a better, more sustainable world.
Our One Planet Once Chance Roadmap, based on our endorsement as a One Planet Company in 2012, led us to be one of the first engineering consultancies to be certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust in 2018 and highlighted the scale of impact we can have through our projects.
Our ZCD2030 commitment means that all designers and consultants and Cundall work collectively towards decarbonising their projects and that we are aligning our designs with the Paris Agreement’s decarbonisation trajectory.
In 2024 and 2025, we refreshed our materiality assessment from 2022 and drafted the next iteration of our One Planet One Chance Roadmap. This draft is currently under review and will be published in 2026.
Our purpose as a business is to create opportunities for our people and sustainable solutions for the planet.
