This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
I show engineering excellence by recognising patterns, adapting solutions from other disciplines, and grounding my work in evidence. I applied offshore wireline logging techniques to improve data reliability in ground investigations and published the findings to influence industry practice. I also encouraged inclusion by helping develop and promote the British Standard BS 30417 on inclusive PPE. For me, excellence is curiosity, courage, and improving how our sector works.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
I want the next 50 years to create an inviting, inclusive and future‑ready industry where geology is seen as exciting and essential to the built environment. Ground engineering underpins every structure we design, and we need to showcase that value to inspire new talent. My work on inclusive PPE, including contributing to BS 30417, helps remove barriers for women and minority groups, ensuring the next generation can belong.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
A myth I’d love to bust is that geologists/geo‑environmental engineers just look at soils and rocks. In reality, we are integral to the built environment as we assess contamination, manage geotechnical risks, and play a vital role in climate resilience. Ground engineering blends geology, engineering and sustainability to allow safer design decisions across every project.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
A defining milestone was turning my own struggles with PPE into action by helping develop BS 30417 on inclusive PPE. I never expected it to open doors, from speaking in Parliament to changing legislation. That journey helped me find my voice, build confidence, and shape real change. It also propelled my professional growth, contributing to my Chartership progress and recognition as a Top 20 Woman in Ground Engineering.
