This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
Excellence for me is a daily commitment to the detail, to continuous improvement, and to the people around me. In critical systems, small oversights have real consequences, so I never stop questioning and double-checking. I believe we grow stronger by sharing knowledge, supporting each other, and staying open to learning at every stage of our careers.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
I'd love to see sustainability become so embedded in everything we do that we stop talking about it as a target , it is just how we engineer. But more than anything, I hope the next 50 years protect what makes Cundall special: the people, the culture and the commitment to excellence that we mentioned before.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
That electricity is magic! With a little patience and the right explanation, anyone can understand how a system works and why it matters.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
Moving into Data Centres and having to relearn almost everything from scratch was one of the most challenging moments of my career — and one of the most rewarding. The support of my colleagues made all the difference, and those connections stay with me today. It taught me that stepping outside your comfort zone, with the right people around you, is where you grow the most.
