This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
I show engineering excellence by applying my technical knowledge to deliver accurate and efficient HVAC designs that also provide practical building solutions. As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, I am continuously looking for opportunities to develop both technically and professionally to enhance my skills and provide excellence and efficiency within my work.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
Over the next 50 years, I would like to see the industry become even more inclusive, with more young women pursuing a career in engineering. I think we will get there by challenging outdated industry stereotypes about who can succeed as an engineer and demonstrating to younger audiences that people from all backgrounds can thrive within this industry.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
One myth about my role is that mechanical building services engineering only involves designing pipework and ductwork for a building. While this is part of the role, we also influence how buildings operate efficiently by balancing occupant wellbeing and comfort with energy efficient design. Bringing these factors together shape the overall design solution for each building.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
As I am in the early years of my career, a key milestone for me was completing my Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering and receiving the CIBSE Scotland Student Award for being the top graduating student in my course. This recognised five years of hard work and dedication, which has shaped me into the engineer I am today and has motivated me to continue to strive for excellence in my work.
