This year's IWIED theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. How do you think you show #EngineeringExcellence in your work?
Delivering engineering excellence in ESG means, for instance, turning complex carbon data across large organisations, assets and supply chains into clear pathways to Net Zero. From building inventories to modelling targets and facilitating workshops, I bridge technical analysis with practical delivery. The focus is not just robust outputs but enabling decisions that are achievable, helping organisations navigate complexity and deliver credible, lasting emissions reductions.
So much has changed in the 50 years since Cundall was founded. What changes would you like to see in the next 50 years, and how do you think we'll get there?
In the next 50 years, I’d like to see sustainability fully embedded in every decision within Cundall and in every project, not a parallel consideration, but the default. This means decarbonisation at scale, clients that take full accountability, and designs that respond to both climate and community needs. Getting there will require collaboration, better data, and a continued focus on turning ambition into practical, deliverable outcomes.
What’s a myth about your role that you’d love to bust?
There are a few myths I’d love to challenge. First, that ESG is driven by politics, when in practice it’s about managing risk, strengthening resilience, and supporting better long‑term decisions. Second, that sustainability undermines financial performance, even though there is growing evidence that well‑integrated ESG strategies can unlock value, including financial benefits, and improve outcomes over time.
What’s one experience or milestone in your career that shaped who you are today?
A defining moment in my career was stepping away from a secure path in automotive and IT to pursue my passion - sustainability. It meant returning to study and moving countries, without certainty of outcome. At the time, it felt like a risk, but looking back, it shaped my direction and motivation. Moving to a different country has also broadened my perspective and taught me so much - something I recommend everyone to try, even for just a short while!
