Celebrating Cundall’s 50th anniversary: Bernard Johnston

We sat down with Bernard Johnston, one of Cundall’s Founding Partners, to reflect on time at the beginning of the practice, the ambition that shaped it in 1976, and how engineering has evolved since. Bernard also shares how structural engineering has developed over time and discusses what creativity, one of our core values, means for engineers.

Concordia Leisure Centre, Cramlington, UK

The team secured their first major leisure project. This was the start of delivering leisure centres across the UK.

Regent Centre Block H, Newcastle, UK

Appointed on the final block of the 40,000m2 office development, which was (at the time) Europe’s largest office complex, and later became Cundall’s head office.

Equity and Law Life Assurance Society, Newcastle, UK

Cundall’s first national corporate real estate client. The brief was to optimise the workplace while preserving brand identity.

The Mound, Edinburgh, UK

Winning the Saltire Prize for Conservation, the 11-storey landmark building underwent a full internal redesign whilst retaining the external walls. Originally built in 1723, this strengthened Cundall's portfolio for working on historical buildings.

The Telegraph, Fleet Street, London, UK

By developing trust with the client, the team was able to support the existing fit-out and introduce cooling to the print room within a live environment, resolving an issue long faced by the client.

The Telegraph, Docklands, London, UK

The successful delivery of the first project for The Telegraph, led to a second appointment for the Docklands printing plant. The relationship with The Telegraph drove the decision to open the London office.

Civic Offices, Chester le Street, UK

The aluminium-clad town centre landmark in Chester-le-Street introduced the concept of open-plan working at a time when it was still uncommon. The project went on the receive multiple accolades, including the Constrado Awards and a RIBA Award.

Daily Mail and Evening Standard, Harmsworth Quays, London, UK

The team was able to use lessons learnt from the early print works projects and apply them to the Harmsworth Quays printing facility.

The Barbican, York, UK

​​Designed as a live entertainment centre for York, the 6,000m2 development was York’s largest multi-purpose indoor arena at the time.

Our current longest-serving employee, Sharon Ramshaw, joined the business as a critical member of the support services team.

The first of 10 leisure buildings built on the Shetland Isles for Shetland Recreational Trust.

The Barbican, York, UK

A 6,000m² development comprising multi-purpose hall for theatre/conc​​ert and spectator sport use with an adjacent one court sports hall. The centre is designed to provide a live entertainment centre for the whole City of York and a sports and recreation facility for the local community.
